Vernacular typography surrounds us everyday—from store signs to concert posters to stickers on the side of a streetcar. It carries a sense of history and culture, and through this project, has become a source of inspiration for a group of young designers.
However, with the recent increase in development in Portland, vernacular typography in the city is fleeting. The group has set out to document found typography in Portland and archive it in this book. Each designer used their unique perception of design to create compositions using purely found typography from their chosen neighborhoods.
We hope that by doing so we have not only preserved a moment in Portland’s history, but interpreted it in a way that will showcase the beauty of vernacular type.
